Virtual bookkeeping means your bookkeeper works in your accounting file online, collects documents through a portal or shared folder, and meets with you by video or phone. For many Idaho owners it is simply how bookkeeping works now, whether the bookkeeper lives in Kuna or in another state.
This list mixes two kinds of provider. Idaho-based bookkeepers who work remotely know the local business landscape and can usually meet in person if you ever need to. National online services run larger teams and standardized processes, and they serve businesses in every state. Both can work well; the right choice depends on how much personal contact you want and how complex your books are.
National services change quickly. Bench, for example, paused operations in December 2024 and now runs under new ownership, so we checked every firm's own website in September 2026 before listing it. If you are comparing several providers, our Boise small business bookkeeping list covers local firms in more depth.
How we chose these services
- The firm's own website shows it is active in September 2026 and offers ongoing bookkeeping for small businesses.
- It works remotely, either as an Idaho-based firm serving clients online or as a national online service.
- It says clearly what the service covers, such as reconciliations, monthly financial statements or catch-up work.
- It names the accounting software it works in, or explains how you will see your numbers.
- Idaho-based firms are labeled with their town; national services are labeled as remote.
Danielson Bookkeeping & Consulting
Carey Danielson runs Danielson Bookkeeping & Consulting from Kuna and works with small businesses and churches across Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Eagle, Caldwell and Star, as well as clients further afield remotely. Carey holds an MBA, is a QuickBooks Online Advanced ProAdvisor, and brings 20+ years of bookkeeping and financial management experience.
Services include monthly bookkeeping, account reconciliations, financial reports you can act on, and financial process improvement, plus QuickBooks setup, cleanup, catch-up, migration and training with written procedures. See how we work for what a remote engagement looks like.
- QuickBooks Online Advanced ProAdvisor with an MBA
- 20+ years of bookkeeping and financial management, much of it with churches
- Industry pages for trades, restaurants, salons, real estate agents, e-commerce and more
- Based in Kuna and serves the Treasure Valley as well as remote clients
Worth knowing
- Works in QuickBooks Online; no other accounting software is offered.
- Does not prepare tax returns, do tax planning or perform audits. Carey is a bookkeeper, not a certified public accountant, and coordinates with your tax adviser.
My Virtual Bookkeeper
My Virtual Bookkeeper is a Treasure Valley firm (a registered DBA of an Idaho limited liability company, per its site) that offers monthly bookkeeping, cleanup and catch-up, and payroll support. Its Meridian Chamber listing says it serves Star, Boise, Meridian, Eagle and Nampa, and businesses nationwide virtually.
The site highlights construction and trade clients, including job costing and WIP reporting, as well as salons and service businesses. It describes flat monthly pricing in three support tiers but does not publish the amounts.
- Local Treasure Valley firm that works virtually
- Construction-focused bookkeeping with job costing and WIP reporting
- Separate catch-up and cleanup service for books that are months or years behind
- Payroll processing, with assistance on payroll tax filings, listed as a service
Worth knowing
- Pricing amounts aren't published.
- Check which accounting software it supports if you are not on QuickBooks Online.
Clear Ledger Bookkeeping
Clear Ledger Bookkeeping is based in Boise and says it operates remotely to support new and small businesses locally and across the country, as well as family trusts. Its owner, Javier Bucheli, is listed on the site as a certified public accountant and an Intuit ProAdvisor with QuickBooks Level 1 certification.
The firm's site is clear that the company itself is a bookkeeping business, not a licensed accounting firm: it does not do audits, reviews, compilations or tax preparation. Its services run from cleaning up years of messy books to monthly financial statements.
- Boise-based, remote by design
- Owner lists QuickBooks ProAdvisor certification on the site
- Handles both multi-year cleanup and ongoing monthly statements
- Plain statement of what it does and does not do
Worth knowing
- No tax preparation or tax advice, per its own site, so you will still need a tax preparer.
- Pricing isn't published.
DSO Pro Bookkeeping
DSO Pro Bookkeeping was founded by Deslyn O'Dell, who the site describes as a Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor based in Meridian. The firm uses cloud-based systems to work with businesses across the Treasure Valley and says the same setup lets it serve businesses nationwide.
Its service list is broad for a small firm: monthly bookkeeping, bank and credit card reconciliation, accounts receivable, bill pay, job costing, QuickBooks cleanup, 1099 filing, QuickBooks payroll processing, fixed assets and inventory tracking.
- Founder lists Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor credential
- Wide menu of add-on services, from bill pay to inventory tracking
- Service area pages cover Meridian, Boise, Nampa, Eagle, Caldwell, Kuna and beyond
Worth knowing
- Pricing isn't published.
- Built around QuickBooks; confirm fit if you use other software.
Bench
Bench is an online bookkeeping service for U.S. businesses. Its own About page explains that Bench paused operations in December 2024, was acquired within days by Employer.com, and resumed service in January 2025; it describes itself as fully operational in 2026 with an in-house bookkeeping team.
Current options on its site include bookkeeping inside Bench's own software, a "Just Bookkeeping" option that keeps your existing systems, catch-up bookkeeping, and tax filing.
- Operating again under Employer.com ownership, per its own site
- Choice between Bench's platform or your existing systems
- Catch-up bookkeeping and tax filing offered as separate services
Worth knowing
- Remote only, with a national team rather than a local contact.
- Given the 2024 shutdown, ask how you can export your records if you ever leave.
Pilot
Pilot provides bookkeeping, tax and CFO services for startups and small businesses. Its bookkeeping page describes a dedicated team that handles monthly closes, categorization and reporting, with communication through an online portal.
Each month it delivers a profit and loss statement, balance sheet and statement of cash flows, according to its site.
- Dedicated team with a client portal
- Monthly P&L, balance sheet and cash flow statement
- Tax and CFO services available as you grow
Worth knowing
- Remote only.
- Much of its marketing is aimed at venture-backed startups; ask how it serves a local service business.
Bookkeeper360
Bookkeeper360 says it has provided bookkeeping, tax and fractional CFO support since 2012, with payroll and HR services alongside. Clients are assigned a dedicated accountant located in the United States.
It works in Xero or QuickBooks Online and can move you to either during onboarding, which its site says typically takes one to two weeks. It also offers its own app with performance dashboards and messaging.
- Dedicated U.S.-based accountant
- Supports both Xero and QuickBooks Online
- Payroll, tax and fractional CFO services available
Worth knowing
- Remote only.
- Compare the bundle against your needs; you may not need payroll or CFO services.
1-800Accountant
1-800Accountant offers online small business bookkeeping and tax services. Its bookkeeping page lists transaction categorization, account reconciliation and monthly financial statements.
The service is built around pairing bookkeeping with tax work: its site describes a team of a bookkeeper, tax preparer and tax advisor.
- Monthly categorization, reconciliation and financial statements
- Bookkeeping and tax preparation from the same provider
- Year-round tax planning offered as part of its packages
Worth knowing
- Remote only.
- The service leans toward tax; if you mainly want hands-on bookkeeping and reporting, ask how often you will speak with your bookkeeper.
How to choose a virtual bookkeeper
Start with the software. If you already use QuickBooks Online, a bookkeeper who works in your file lets you keep your history and your login. A service that moves you onto its own platform can be simpler day to day but makes leaving harder.
Next, decide how much contact you want. A small Idaho firm usually means one person who knows your business. A national service usually means a team, a portal and set processes. Neither is better in the abstract.
- Who owns the accounting file, and can you export everything if you leave?
- Who will you actually talk to each month?
- What happens if your books are behind when you start?
- Does the price include catch-up work, payroll or 1099 preparation, or are those extra?
What a remote engagement usually involves
Most virtual bookkeepers connect to your bank and card feeds, categorize transactions, reconcile each account, and send monthly reports. You supply receipts, bills and answers to questions through a portal or email. Our guide to bank feeds and reconciliation explains the core of that monthly work, and the monthly bookkeeping checklist shows what your side of the process looks like.
Bookkeeping is not tax preparation
Some services on this list prepare tax returns and some do not. If yours does not, you will still need a tax preparer, and your bookkeeper's job is to hand that person clean, reconciled records. Ask your tax adviser what they need from the books before year-end.
