Contractor books are harder than most. Money comes in by draw or progress payment, costs land on jobs weeks apart, subs need 1099s, and a single profit and loss statement can hide one losing job behind three good ones.

Every firm on this list states on its own website that it works with contractors, trades or construction businesses. We checked each site in September 2026 and noted what each one says it offers, including job costing, cleanup and whether it prepares tax returns.

For background before you talk to anyone, read our guide to job costing for contractors or our construction and trades page.

Questions to ask a contractor bookkeeper

  • How do you set up job costing in QuickBooks, and who enters costs against each job?
  • Do you handle progress billing or retainage, or should I ask my accountant?
  • Will my books be ready for my tax adviser, lender or bonding agent at year end?
  • Do you prepare tax returns, or work alongside the person who does?
  • What does cleanup cost if my file is months behind?

Where bookkeeping stops and your tax adviser starts

A bookkeeper keeps the records. Decisions about entity type, depreciation on trucks and equipment, revenue recognition on long jobs and anything a surety needs audited or reviewed belong with a tax adviser or accounting firm. Ask your tax adviser what they want from your books and share that list with your bookkeeper.

Frequently asked questions

What is job costing?

Job costing tracks income, materials, labor and subcontractor costs against each job. It shows which jobs actually made money, which a single company-wide profit and loss statement can hide. Our job costing guide explains the basics.

What is the 1099 threshold for paying subcontractors?

For payments made after December 31, 2025, the IRS threshold for Forms 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC is $2,000 in a calendar year, adjusted for inflation from 2027. Rules have exceptions, so confirm with your tax adviser. See paying contractors and 1099 records.

Does Danielson Bookkeeping prepare contractor tax returns?

No. Danielson Bookkeeping & Consulting keeps your books, reconciles your accounts and prepares monthly reports. It does not prepare tax returns, do tax planning or perform audits or reviews, so you keep working with your own tax adviser.

Can a bookkeeper fix a QuickBooks file that's years behind?

Usually, yes. Several firms here list cleanup or catch-up work. Catch-up enters missing months, and cleanup corrects books that exist but are wrong. See cleanup vs catch-up bookkeeping.

How were these firms chosen?

Each firm states on its own website that it works with contractors, trades or construction, and is based in Boise or the Treasure Valley. Details come from those sites as of September 2026. No firm paid to be listed.
